It’s no secret that I’m somewhat of a Scandiphile. From the books about Danish culture to the cookbooks about Swedish cooking, to the Icelandic phrase book and Nordic ceramics in my house, it’s safe to say I love the Northern European cultures and languages. What is especially inspiring is the Northern European fibre heritage, and this issue of Inside Crochet welcomes the winter solstice with that in mind.Buy this issue →Go digital →
We have Faroe-inspired colourwork in Emily Platt’s stunning Fjord Sweater, modern Scandi greys with Cassie Ward’s Greta Dress and beautiful Swedish vibes crocheted into every stitch of Eline Alcocer’s incredible Havet Shawl. Of course, the Nordic star had to make its appearance in this issue too, so Elisabeth Davis de Herraiz’s Hygge Cowl features exactly that, in a typically Nordic colourway of grey and mustard. Speaking of which, the colours for this issue are inspired by the winter landscapes of Scandinavia, and also by the trip I made to Iceland last winter; there’s the deep charcoal greys of the volcanic landscape, the striking pale hues of the Blue Lagoon, and mustard yellow like the lichen on the rocks.
We’ve also alluded to the winter traditions of Scandinavia – Gurinder Hatchard’s Snow Queen is straight out of Hans Andersen’s wintery fairy tale! So whether you’re spending Jul in a forest in Lapland or simply cosying up at home this Christmas, this issue has tons of hyggelig inspiration.
