We’re deep into late spring and with the grass flushing green and hedgerows frothy with cow parsley our thoughts naturally turn to spending time in the great outdoors. And what’s more British than a village fete?
For those of you overseas, this traditional event takes place on village greens and school playing fields, with old-fashioned fun such as a tombola, coconut shy, and homegrown flower and vegetable competitions. There’s cake, games and, inevitably, a chance of a few showers. And it’s a beautiful show of community.
This issue of Inside Crochet celebrates this in yarn form, of course, with Sam Sabido’s beautiful Best in Show Cardigan and Kate Eastwood’s Hoopla Wreath showing off the season’s produce. I also love the circus-like feel of Jess Bennett’s fabulous Harlequin Headscarf and Helda Panagary’s colourful Carnival Wrap, while Victoria Kairis’s hook-a-duck game and cute Theo hand puppet are as much fun to create as they are to play with.
I’ll be making up Theodora Burrow’s Battenburg Tee in soft mohair yarn, and I can’t wait to snuggle under my Cream Tea Blanket, created in a vintage-style stitch that would be a great stashbuster. But for now, it’s time to lay out the (handmade) doilies for the (homemade) jam and scones and enjoy the sunshine!
