Autumn is my favourite season. I love the ever-changing colours, sounds and smells of this time of year; the brisk snap in the air, the crunch of golden leaves underfoot, the fresh smell of rain and earth. It’s fortunate really – living in the UK, autumn can often feel like it goes on for a substantial part of the year! This is possibly why so many designers take inspiration from the British countryside for their autumn collections, including Ralph Lauren’s fabulous new line. Following his lead, I’m proud to say that this issue of Inside Crochet has been thoroughly inspired by the great British outdoors.
The projects and yarns reviewed this month take their cue from those most British of fabrics: tartan, tweed and Fair Isle, as well as autumn leaves and the coming cold weather. I have so many favourite pieces in this issue, but think that Vicki Brown’s fantastic Sweetheart Sweater will be a staple in my wardrobe for many seasons to come. With its sweet yoke pattern, it is both bang up-to-date and an instant classic. A totally different – but really fun – project this issue is the earring set made from plastic bags, or ‘plarn’, which takes me right back to my days as a textiles student. We’ve also got plenty to read this month, from fun interviews to an in-depth feature on crochet edgings. Finally, as if you needed yet another reason to pick up the hook this month, Lindy Zubairy explores the idea of ‘flow’ and examines its relationship with crochet, so we can begin to understand just why crochet is so utterly calming. Enjoy the issue.
