As I write this, I have an internal theme tune playing – the old fairground organ version of “I Do Like to be Beside the Seaside†accompanied by seagulls squawking and waves gently crashing, and it is all making me incredibly happy! I doubt that there are many things more British than the jolly old seaside holiday, complete with deckchairs, sandcastles, donkeys, fun fair rides and the odd smattering of rain. This issue, take a stroll down the prom with us as we celebrate this grand tradition with a clutch of gorgeous patterns inspired by the British seaside, from practical beach accessories like bags and beach mats to deckchair-striped fabrics and fishy motifs.
It is nigh on impossible for me to select my favourite items from this bonny selection, as I have many nostalgic memories of my own childhood holidays in Bognor, Skegness and Southend (among others), and all of the projects inside take me straight back there. However, I simply must mention Kath Webber’s glorious bunting, which has captured the essence of the British seaside humour in its cheeky, beachy motifs, and would look adorable adorning a beach hut. I especially love the bucket and spade – a wonderfully innocent symbol of the childhood holiday.
There are also some gorgeous garments and accessories that will be perfect vacation attire. Vicki Brown’s sweater looks so chic with shorts for a wander up the pier, while there are lightweight and lacy shawls, scarves and cover-ups that are great for layering in the unpredictable British weather.
Enjoy!
