Caroline Bawn is the owner of online yarn store, Gorgeous Yarns. She made a new year’s resolution to learn to crochet, and we’re documenting her journey in the magazine and here on the website.
“I’ve been busy, as usual, and taught myself the basics of Tunisian crochet. It’s an interesting mixture of knitting and crochet in that you use a hook, but on the forward pass you create stitches and keep them all on the hook, casting them off on the backward pass. There are a variety of stitches, some quite loose and lacy but I’ve just done a basic stitch for now until I feel more confident.
“I’ve just practiced the Simple Stitch (Tss), and created an oblong which has some double crochet around the edge to make a placemat. I used some DK cotton yarn I had in my stash which is ideal as the placemat will be washable, and perfect to use on the table outside for barbeques. It’s very quick to do and this stitch makes a firm texture. With this denim-y yarn, I might add some denim fabric to jazz it up and mix my creative skills even further!
I have been using the Tunisian crochet instructions from issue 77. The instructions and mini masterclass are written with photos for every step so it really is as easy as one, two, three.
“I’m also still working on my Heritage Blanket and hexagons for the Nicky Trench blanket from issue 66, so I’ve got a happy summer of hooking!â€
