From this month, 20 new shades that have been dyed, spun and
balled in the company’s own mill in the Colne Valley at Slaithwaite will be available in yarn shops nationwide.
The Stylecraft HQ is based at Spa Mill, which has been home to spinning for over a century, but after a substantial seven-figure investment into spinning and dyeing technology, a new era begins at the mill. It’s a move designed to reduce the brand’s environmental impact – greater efficiency means using fewer resources such as water and energy, reducing the mill’s carbon footprint, while manufacturing in Yorkshire reduces travel, cutting both fuel consumption and pollution.
‘Bringing Special back to Yorkshire has been our dream for a while now,’ says Annabelle Hill, sales and marketing director at Stylecraft. ‘This major investment makes us the only end-to-end acrylic hand-knit spinner in Western Europe. We are now in complete control of the quality of this much-loved yarn, the stock levels we need to supply our customers, and our impact on the environment.’
After spending months perfecting the new shades and yarn quality, this is just the beginning of a full transition back to Yorkshire for the entire Special DK range. As stocks run out of other shades, new runs will be spun at Spa Mill, eventually bringing all 120 colours home.
