I once read that nowhere in the UK is further than 70 miles from the coast. And there’s something very special about the coast in winter. The wild wind, the empty sands and frothy surf are so captivating. I can see why artists would want to paint it. I love taking the dog for a walk on a near-empty beach and watching the ever-changing light dancing across the tides and grasses, especially once the equinox has passed and the light increases each day.

So with this issue of Inside Crochet we’ve lovingly captured all the glory of a winter beach with cosy cables, cool colours and oh-so-warm fibres. The Dunes Tunisian Cardigan by Eleonora Tully beautifully depicts the shades of her hometown on the south coast of England, and is a great lesson in Tunisian crochet. Cassie Ward’s Pinwheel Sweater is a cosy delight for indoors and out, with tweedy flecks making this a lovely unisex design.
