It’s true what they say: nostalgia ain’t what it used to be! Happily, crochet is naturally rather ‘vintage’ and so this issue celebrates the best bits of the past. Forget the power cuts and Spam fritters, and welcome back the warm tones and golden days of yesteryear, with a modern, Wes Anderson-inspired quirky twist.
We love Lucy Croft’s lace Dijon Top – perfect for slipping on over a favourite dress or tank top, and even pretty enough for evenings. We’ve also fallen in love with Jess Bennett’s hexagon motif Pattie Skirt and Collar, giving perfect 1960s Mary Quant vibes, as does Jenny Street’s Boho Beats Bag. If you’re more of a 1970s crocheter, then Millie Masterton’s stunning Margot Poncho echoes granny’s favourite wallpaper, and Theodora Burrow’s beautiful Joni Waistcoat conjures up images of a folk festival in a field.
Our two beautiful blankets in this issue certainly provide that mid-century magic. Helen Anderson’s Carnaby Blanket is in my favourite colourway of all time – mustard and millennial pink! And Katherine Laight’s stunning Kandinsky Throw gives us a lesson in modern art.
Lastly, we can’t get enough of the rather over-the-top daisy motifs on my Suzy Beret and Dickie – straight out the pages of a 70s crochet magazine! The popcorn stitch flowers are truly addictive…
Happy hooking!
